How to Make the Most of a Gloomy Fall Day

Posted on November 3, 2021November 5, 2021 by Giulia

Ah, gloomy fall days…they can be a downer, can’t they? The weather in my neck of the woods has been really grey and rainy these last couple of days. The kind of day where it’s easy to get down in the dumps. No sunshine and grey skies can get really depressing really fast but to be quite honest, I’ve been enjoying these gloomy days.

Yes, you read that correctly, I’ve been enjoying these super grey, rainy and gloomy days. They are apart of the fall season after all, and really set the fall mood. So I’m down for them.

But I don’t want too many more gloomy days at the moment because they are a bit of a mood killer. Since we have to have them on occasion however, it’s best to make the most of them. Let’s talk about how to enjoy them a bit more, shall we?

Curl Up in Bed and Read

These gloomy falls days where the skies are grey and it rains all day are perfect days to stay in bed and read. I know that doesn’t sound like you’re making the most of the day, but it is perfect for self care. So if you can, take the day to indulge and practice some self care—read in bed, watch a movie, lounge in the tub, make yourself a cup of tea and just get cozy. A day of rest and relaxation is something everyone needs, so why not take that gloomy day and give yourself permission to just relax?

Get Cooking and Make Soups

If you feel like you ought be productive, even on a rainy day, it is the perfect day to get cooking. Personally on a gloomy fall day, I’d make some soup. You can find some lovely autumnal soup recipes and make a couple of batches of soup. Soup is great to freeze, so you’ll have some pre-made for busy nights. You could also make chili!

De-clutter and Organize Your Closet

Again, if you need to do something, a rainy day is the perfect day to de-clutter your closet. I’ve been working hard towards becoming more minimal and it’s amazing how great I feel after a good de-clutter. I feel lighter, freer and just darn good. I use some of Marie Kondo’s methods when de-cluttering and I find it really helps with letting go and making decisions.

Bake Sweet Treats

If you enjoy baking, or want to bake more, or need to bake, gloomy fall days are perfect for baking. What could be better than making a delicious batch of chocolate chip cookies and then enjoying them warm with a cup of tea or coffee? Or even perfecting your icing technique on a yummy vanilla cake? Baking would be a great way to make the most of a grey, rainy day.

Hobby Away

Time to get crafty! Crochet, knit, sew, paint, whatever it is you craft, a gloomy fall day is the perfect day to indulge in your hobbies. Hobbies provide us with a sense of meaning, and are great for self care and lifting your spirits, so this might be especially good for you if you feel blue on grey days. I know I love to crochet on grey and gloomy days.

Break Out Your Journals and Planners

I always feel introspective on gloomy days, so this is the perfect time to take out the journals and planners. You can get your week or month organized, journal for self love, or do the more creative journals like reading journals. I have been journaling more this year (though not as much as I would have liked) and it’s been a great form of self care, and also a get form of creative expression.

In Conclusion

Gloomy fall and winter days are going to be a reality for the next few months, so we need to make the most of them. Especially if we find the darker days and greyer skies affects our mood. I personally always find February a long, hard month because by then the lack of sunshine and greenery has gotten to me, and I always give myself permission to take it easy and get in some extra self care and rest when I’m feeling affected by the gloominess. Be sure you do too!

Tbh, I would love to just curl up& sleep on a gloomy day. But reality strikes & a mom of a toddler and teen is not allowed a cozy slumber.

Love this! Some great ideas. I usually just stay in my pyjamas and watch TV all day. Or I bake something comforting and chocolate!
