Super Cool Crafts To do In Lockdown

Posted on February 26, 2021February 20, 2021 by Giulia

Have you considered doing some cool crafts in lockdown? I sure haven’t and I really should have had the idea sooner. Too bad too, because there are a few crafts I am interested in trying out. I consider myself somewhat crafty—I have taken up bullet journaling, and while I’m not ready to splash it all over Instagram, there are a few pages I am proud of. I crochet, and I know I’m capable in that craft. However, there are so many crafts we could be exploring during this time instead of watching every Netflix series that comes up on our recommendation list. Even if you don’t consider crafty at all, this could be a good time to try something out of your comfort zone, or gain some crafting ability. And even if your efforts aren’t stellar, we were all beginners once and practice will help you hone those skills.

Let’s dive into those cool crafts we can all do during lockdown, shall we?

Origami

This is a super cool craft to do in lockdown. All you need is paper. I’ve heard that this is an easy craft (thought it looks daunting to me) and I have been meaning to take this up for ages. You can start with regular old paper and then get some nicer sheets from a craft store or online shop as your techinque evolves. There are likely YouTube videos and online tutorials in blogs you can check out to help you. I used to have a book on this but I think I donated it. Sigh.

Resin Art

Not a craft I’d try myself, but resin art is really big right now. I see tons of this art from being crafted into jewellery—earrings and bracelets have definitely caught my eye—and I know there is a lot more you can create with resin. This cool craft does sound like you need a lot of supplies, but you can learn a lot before you start from YouTube videos and trying something a little more involved might be the perfect idea if you are stuck at home so why not give this craft a go? It might be the perfect craft to do in lockdown.

Embroidery

This craft is making a comeback. So why not try this as one the crafts to do in lockdown? Using a needle and thread, you can create beautiful pieces to put on display or even add on as an embellishment to an item of clothing, like a pair of jeans, or on the side of one your most breathable face masks. I have toyed with the idea of trying this myself, but am as yet undecided. You can free patterns online, and I’ve heard that some kits are quite affordable on Amazon.

Seed Beading

Again, not a craft I’d try myself, but apparently this is quite popular, and you can make everything from necklaces and bracelets to cute little animals. My understanding is you can also make 3D shapes or figurines, so depending this could be a fun and engaging craft to try your hand at. I’ve read there are patterns you can find to help you, and that does sound helpful.

Painting

I wish I could paint! I think it would be so soothing, and maybe one day I’ll try it. You can do watercolour paints, acrylic paints, even oil paints! I’ve even seen some tutorials online that show you step by step how to paint a certain scene, which I think is quite cool. Of course painting can be expensive as you’ll need a lot of supplies, but I also think it could be rewarding and it could be the best craft to do in lockdown as it’s likely very soothing.

Soap Making

A lot of people are making their own soap these days! Some got into the craft as a side business, others want to have luxury soap without paying high prices, and still others just want to know exactly what is going into products that they are using on their skin. The lovely thing about soap making is, in my opinion, is that you can customize it so many different ways—you can make it floral scented, or citrus scented, and use different molds to create different shapes. Soap making is a craft I’d consider trying my hand at, and you don’t need a ton of supplies.

tatting

Tatting is essentially lace making, though it’s done at home and uses only a needle (attached to a shuttle which holds the thread) and possibly a crochet hook. Traditionally tatted pieces were used on the clothes of children, or to adorn an apron but today beautiful dollies (I know it sounds old fashioned, but I think they are lovely and own a few myself) and things like bookmarks are made from this old domestic craft. I was once quite serious about trying this myself, but I tried crocheting with fine thread and quickly became frustrated, so I don’t think this is the craft for me. I wish it was, because this is a craft to do in lockdown that would make the hours pass quickly.

Hand Lettering

If you are envious of the lovey writing featured in bullet journal pages on Pinterest and Instagram, then this is the craft to do in lockdown. Hand letting is essentially learning to write a simple type face and then you can add in your own embellishments like swirls or leaves or whatever catches your fancy. And now, you can not only have stunning bullet journal pages, but can also create impressive birthday cards or even chalkboard signs.

Conclusion

There are plenty of super cool crafts to do in lockdown. I’ve only listed a handful, but there are others there. You may even already be crafty at one or two. Crafting is a great way to de-stress, to practice mindfulness and to get our creative juices flowing. Plus, it’s fun to do something fun. There’s a reason most kids love crafts and it’s because making something from essentially nothing is very rewarding. So enjoy your crafting!

We’ve been painting rocks, garnishing them and hiding them or adding them to our local rock snakes. Ours are pretty basic but some of them our there are beautiful

I love some cool craft ideas, especially while in Lockdown. I’ve recently started cross-stitching again, which is a nice way to unwind. I do put on a Netflix show while I craft, though, as I need a bit of background noise. 😂

I love origami, but it can be hard, depending on the design you pick. Embroidery is something I want to try, as there are some beautiful designs to create. Everyone seems to be making their own soap, as you say. My sister and mum have recently made their own soap, but they had a kit to kick start their soap making.

Thank you for sharing this list; I will have to try a few!

My younger sister loves to embroider and she can do the most tiny stitches! I learned to embroider alongside her, but her passion and attention to detail carried her way further than a simple need to have busy hands.
Loving the idea of getting into hand lettering; the writer in me says ‘Yes’! Trying new things is a great way to find something to enjoy, especially if you are willing to experimenting in many different craft areas.
    Thanks for sharing. 🙂
