Here’s a little something you don’t know about me, I have my BA in English. I adore books, and writing and reading and I think I’ve said in another post before that I have not stopped reading books since the day I learned how to read. So today I want to share you some of my favourite authors. Because all book lovers need to know about all the amazing out there in the world to be read.
Philippa Gregory
This author was one I encountered some twenty years ago, and she’s likely best known to you as the brains behind the movie, The Other Boylen Girl. If you are a fan of period pieces, you might also know this author through the Starz series, The White Queen followed by The White Princess and The Spanish Princess. Gregory is an author of historical fiction and I have been reading her books on and off for twenty years. Some are a miss for me, but some are truly amazing reads. I love that she brings to life the stories of women in time so dominated by men and how she weaves fact with fiction, some of which is very plausible supposition. Outside of her historical fiction I have not read much of this author, but in this she excels and so I love reading her books.
Ruth Ware
I’ve never been much for contemporary fiction or mysteries, but I must say that this author has my attention. I have read three of her novels, and each of them was very enjoyable and engaging reading. I read, in this order, The Death of Mrs. Westaway, The Woman in Cabin 10 and The Turn of the Key. I thought each was amazing, though my favourite was The Turn of the Key. There was something more dreadful about it, and I found the ending especially poignant. I have another of her book on my shelf (literally) and I hope I can read it soon.
Daphne du Maurier
Last night I dreamt of I went to Manderley again... The opening lines of du Maurier’s famous novel Rebecca draw you in immediately. I was introduced to this author when I was in high school, and I have read several of her novels. They are true art and no chore to read. The writing is beautiful, the stories are compelling, the characters vividly drawn. It’s no wonder that I love this author. Each time I read this talented author I feel like a new reader again, mesmerized and I am totally transported into the world of the novel. Of course, being an author that wrote almost a hundred years ago, her style is quite different than today’s authors, who I find much quicker but to read du Maurier is to read the best of the best. Think of it like this: would you rather a cupcake with icing, or would you rather a cupcake with butter icing and chocolate bits on top?
Lisa Kleypas
I’m guessing about eight or nine years ago now I started reading romance novels for the first time in my life. And I totally fell in the love with the genre. Romance novels have a bad rap but they are not low brow reading. The issues tackled in romance are relevant to women, and very relevant to today’s society. So don’t look down on this genre. Lisa Kleypas is my favourite author in this genre (and I adore a ton of authors in the genre) but she especially I find quite powerful. Her novels are historical romance, but they deal with many women’s issues and relationship issues in that really got me thinking of today’s society. I think of her as the Jane Austen of the romance genre. And just so you know, Austen is also a favourite author of mine. Kleypas novels are witty, romantic, and just she’s just a beautiful storyteller.
Lisa See
I really enjoyed each of this author’s books. She’s a ton of books, and none of those I have read have failed to impress. My favourite was definitely, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan which was even turned into a movie with Hugh Jackman. Her writing transports you entirely into a new world, and the storytelling is so powerful. Her themes are universal and I just love curling up with her book in my lap. I’ve got several more of her novels on my TBR list, and I am sure I will enjoy them all.
Being a huge lover of books and reading, these are only some of my favourite authors. These are some that I thought love as they aren’t trending, at least not that I know of, on social media. And these are all authors I think definitely deserve some love. Reading brings me a lot of peace, and hopefully if you love reading as much as I do, this post might have introduced to a new author or two. Happy reading friends!

I loved this idea for a post, rarely does one think about the writer themselves – it is often more the book. I’ve only actually read Daphne du Maurier from this post; after finally reading Rebecca at the start of this year (which I LOVED). Definitely going to check out Philippa Gregory though x

Ruth Ware is also one of my favorite!! Though she’s the only in your list that i’ve read so far 😅 I read all of them until further publications.. while I agree with the first two you picked, The turn of the key was actually the one I liked the least.. it was just too concentrated on the babysitting day-to-day life without really adding anything to the suspense. I found that pretty dragging..
