Where To Eat In Old Montreal

Posted on September 25, 2020December 16, 2020 by Giulia

A Honeymoon travel Series

On September 22, my husband and I had been married exactly one month. And neither of us could believe how fast that month went, and I can’t believe that Montreal is already a month behind me. It was a great honeymoon, not your usual tropical beach get away, but perfect nevertheless.

As far as I can tell, eating in old Montreal is always going to be an experience. There are so many unique restaurants catering to a variety of tastes and culinary styles. I didn’t take pictures of every meal I ate, but I am going to share some of my experiences with dining out in this post. Mind you, I think to answer the question, where to eat in old Montreal? the answer is anywhere! Honestly we had no complaints at all no matter where we went.

Mandy’s

One of the restaurants we visited was Mandy’s. I fell in love the moment we walked in there; the atmosphere was just serene and yet fun and the food was amazing. Mandy’s is a gourmet salad bar and perfect for someone like me who loves her veggies, and who enjoys fresh tasting food. There are now several locations in Montreal, and honestly you won’t walk out of there hungry. Just look at the guacamole! We had to pack some to take away, and it was just as tasty that night.

Beer and Poutine

Montreal is known for it’s craft beers and we certainly indugled when we were there. I can’t remember which microbreweries we stopped at for beer, but each was amazing. My husband and I always ordered something different and then tasted each other, and we both loved every one we had. So definitely stop for a tall cold one.

We also had to stop for poutine, because what is a trip to Quebec without poutine? A travesty, that’s what. I actually had poutine twice and both were good, though the first poutine shop we ate at was definitely better. If you want a really amazing poutine experience in Montreal, I am told that it is not to be found in old Montreal, but elsewhere in the city, so do some research and talk to the locals.

Drinks and More

We didn’t just have salads and poutine in Montreal. We stopped in a restaurant that served Mexican fusion and just nice food, and we had some tacos. Again, we ordered different kinds and tasted each other’s meals and all of those tacos were delicious, and so fresh! I’m yearning for some just thinking about them.

We also dined at a steakhouse that had some nice vegetarian options, perfect for both me and my meat eating husband. I had a traditonal Greek salad (no lettuce) with simple olive oil and oregano as the dressing. It was amazing. Sadly, I forgot to take a picture of this but trust me it looked as good as it tasted.

We also had the most mouthwatering lemon risotto and then had a drink for dessert–it was a lemon drop martini and quite on the sweet side, something different for us both.

Final Thoughts

Every day was it’s own mini adventure in Montreal, and part of that was exploring the restaurants. After all, who doesn’t want great food when they go on vacation? It’s a chance to get out, kick back and just enjoy the company of your family and friends, or my case my husband. No wants to come back from any vacation and have the memory of not enjoying their meals, or worse, have upset stomachs. You’ll definitely love the dining in old Montreal, so it’s totally a great place to visit for a foodie.

All the food looks so good! I want a big bowl of poutine now. 🙂
That said, I appreciate that Mandy’s serves such a big bowl of guacamole; I could eat it with chips for my main course and be full, but the restaurants around me always serve tiny portions.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience through photos and writing!

I know, so many places really have tiny portions of guacamole, it’s so frustrating and disappointing. I make it at home sometimes and I devour the stuff!

Ah, congratulations on your marriage! I’ve never been to Montreal but your photos are gorgeous and are making me VERY hungry right now. That poutine looks absolutely delicious 🙂
