Need a brain dump? Or, as I call it, to de-clutter your heard space? If you have seen Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netfllix you know the peace and calm tidying up brings. Last January, I set about tidying up my home after watching the show. I took every item of clothing I own and piled it on my bed. I went through the whole process of tidying up my bedroom, then the kitchen and so on until my home was tidy. And I felt so good. So accomplished. So organized. I had de-cluttered. And I was ready to move forward with things that I loved.
Then my boyfriend moved in. And somehow, I began the whole process all over again. This time, it was in order to utilize the space I had used for myself for us both. And I’m still in the middle of that process. We started five and half months ago with the bedroom. We used the principles of feng shui to place our furniture. And I seriously loved it! So we decided to re-arrange the bedroom and front entry according to those same principles. And I loved that too! Our home was coming together, and that felt amazing. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is for your living space with your SO to be beautiful and restful to you both. I love that we are living in a space that is ours, even though there is still some tidying up to be done. And all that de-cluttering really did de-clutter my head space too.

Tidying Up, the Right Way?
I love the way Marie Kondo honours items as she tidies up. Her idea of thanking things and saying good bye to them makes sense because people clutter up their home with things often out of some sense of guilt. “Grandma gave me that.” “It might be useful some day.” “I’ll wear that dress at least one more time.” Tidying up using the methods from the show really helped me let go of a lot of stuff. And it did my mental health a world of good to de-clutter my home guilt free. But now that I’ve tidied up and arranged my home according to feng shui, I also feel a lot better. Perhaps the energy flows more as it should. Maybe now the energy in my home is more balanced. It certainly feels more restful than it did. So is there a right way to tidy up? I don’t think so. I think it’s more a matter of tidying up mindfully. Mindfully tidying up has given my head space way more peace and quiet than a simple de-cluttering, where you tend to just toss things away.

Is the work ever done? For me, so far the answer is no. A very big nope actually. I have closets stuffed full of things, and my fiancé (he proposed you see *insert big smiley face here*) is beginning to start organizational projects all over the condo. Which I am fine with since my head space has been to feel cluttered again due to the clutter in my home.
Where to Start with De-cluttering
Your home should be a place of comfort and joy to you. It is your retreat from the world. It should be the most comforting and peaceful place to be. So make it that way. Start with one room, and go from there. Both times I tidied up mindfully I started with the bedroom. So that might be the best starting point. It’s a huge job, so from there go a room that’s a little easier to tidy up like the kitchen. It’s a largely functional room, so organizing drawers and cupboards with bins and trays ought be quick and painless. And, a quick way to de-clutter your head space too and feel more at ease.
As you go along in each room, be sure to discard things that are no longer useful, emotionally valuable or that you simply don’t feel the need to carry into your future. If they don’t spark joy, aren’t necessary any longer in your life, or not useful you can thank it a la Marie Kondo, and discard it guilt free. I found tackling sentimental items room by room easier than trying to do them all at once, so that’s a tip from me to you. I promise you, the entire process while daunting, will bring you a huge sense of pride and peace. Arranging your home to suit your lifestyle, in a way that is functional, beautiful and calming does your head space a world of good. You’ll soon feel calmer in your home, and enjoy it far more than you ever did before. Feeling at ease and loving the space you live in amazingly helps you feel less anxious, more calm and just generally clear headed.
I am still tidying up. Our closets and bathrooms need to be thoroughly organized and de-cluttered. We started this weekend with purchasing a few shelves and bins, and now we are on the road to organizing these small spaces to make the most of them. I’m betting this will beautify our home as well. I hope these tips will help you de-clutter not just your home, but de-clutter your head space as well so you can enjoy a restful, stress free living space.

I love decluttering! I recently did it with my clothes and it made me feel a lot better, definitely helps clear your mind and your surroundings.
I don’t know if I love de-cluttering, but it certainly was needed and I’m glad I found a way to do it that made the process easier. And the mental health benefits are HUGE for sure!
I’m great at decluttering. I hate clutter and I hate owning too much stuff. I have no problem throwing things away! My boyfriend however….! It’s a nightmare. Great post! <3
I think it’s both a personality thing and a how you were raised thing when it comes to decluttering. If you were raised to hold on to stuff, it’s harder to break that mindset. I tend to swing between wanting to have less and feeling as though I can’t throw out something for one reason or another.
I have been doing a lot of cleaning and tidying now that I am at home during lockdown.. Its always nice to have a neat room – however there is progress to be made yet!

Taking out everything I own and piling it on the bed is a great way for me to see colors and similar items, and I love the idea of saying a proper goodbye to the items we do not want anymore. 🙂

I’m glad this method is working for you. It’s tricky find space for someone when you used to fill that space by yourself. I’m not a huge fan of the Marie Kondo method, I get quite attached to things that I have memories attached to and find comfort in having my things around me more than I do a full blown declutter. But it’s amazing that you find it benefits your MH! Congratulations on the engagement too! x
