Planning a Wedding in Covid, Update

Posted on July 7, 2020July 21, 2020 by Giulia

Day 2 of the 30 Day Writing Challenge

Planning your wedding should be exciting and fun, and I just beginning to think about the smaller details involved in wedding planning when the pandemic broke out. And, I have to admit, I really despaired during this pandemic of having a wedding of my dreams (or anything remotely similar to a dream wedding) because despite my best efforts, it seemed that weddings in my regional area were highly restricted. So much so, that the wedding reception would not even have included our immediate families.

As you can imagine, this wasn’t acceptable to us. We began to really think outside the box. We planned to hold the wedding on family private property, but there were challenges that we faced in that idea, and neither I or my hubby to be were happy with the cost or setting and logistics of organizing a wedding on this property.

Enter the wedding planner. With the help of her, and my family, we have found a venue where we can hold both our ceremony and a reception for fifty people. The venue is far from us, but it is outdoors and the owners are very flexible. We can have the reception either indoors or outdoors, as the restrictions as change. We are delighted with the grounds, delighted with the flexibility of the venue and just happy that we found a venue that can host our wedding as we want it, as our original venue was not re-opening.

Our wedding plans have changed however. Not everything is exactly as we originally planned. Originally, we had planned a wedding of one hundred people, friends and family. We have reduced the guest list to only fifty, including vendors due to the restrictions caused by the covid outbreak. At this point, due to restrictions, we cannot have any dancing at our wedding as that is not allowed due to the pandemic and physical distancing protocols. But we can at least gather our families and toast to this new chapter in our lives together.

But not all of our family. There are great aunts we cannot invite due to the restrictions, even though we are close to these aunts. We cannot have many our friends join us sadly, because even though neither of our families are very big, together we are already nearly at fifty. We have had to compromise and we were prepared for that, and are happy that the compromise we had in mind was finally doable.

Why Not Postpone?

I was just on the phone with a good friend. We hadn’t talked in a long time and we spent hours chatting, and she asked me why we just didn’t wait until we can have the wedding the way we want it. I have said this before, but I can say it again, there is no guarantee that next summer we will be able to host a wedding with one hundred people and have dancing as we had planned originally. So there really in no point holding off the ceremony and celebration.

Also, the idea of having a wedding a certain way to be “the way we want” is a bit strange to me. The wedding celebration is important to us, and there are certain compromises or things we do not want as apart of our wedding, but the really the celebration is just that, a celebration. Being married is far more important to us and we have waited a long time already, and do not want to delay the commitment we have decided to make one another.

As of right now, we are very happy with our planning is developing and in love with our new venue. We are looking forward to the big day and saying I do.
